Social care recognised in Honours List
Social care recognised in Honours List
The King's Birthday Honours List 2023 has recognised the extraordinary contributions and service of individuals working in adult social care. Amongst those who received honours were:
Clenton Farquharson CBE, Chair of Think Local Act Personal. For services to disability
personalisation, to social care and to health policy.
Clenton has been a long-standing contributor to CMM, most recently writing about how far the sector has come with inclusion and equality over the last 20 years, coinciding with CMM’s 20th anniversary special edition.
Commenting on his honour as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), Clenton said, 'I am deeply honoured and humbled to receive this extraordinary recognition for my work in fostering positive change in health and social care. Being awarded a CBE is not only a personal achievement but a testament to the unwavering support and encouragement of those who have been part of my journey.
'The trust and belief of friends, family, peers, and the communities I have worked with have provided meaningful opportunities to make a lasting impact and contribute to causes I am passionate about. Their presence fuels my passion and drive to support everyone to live the life they want.
'I take pride in my work with Think Local Act Personal (TLAP), reshaping health and social care through personalised community-based care that prioritises co-production, equity, choice, control, and innovation. Together, we can create a ripple effect of positivity and kindness that surpasses our imagination.
'Receiving this CBE is an immense honour, and I share it with all those who have supported me throughout my life. This recognition is a testament the power of collective effort, the strength of community, and the value of pushing oneself to new heights.'
Zoë Fry OBE, Director at The Outstanding Society. For services to social care and nursing.
Zoë is delighted to have been honoured with the Order of the British Empire (OBE) medal. Commenting on the achievement, she said, 'I am incredibly proud that so many people believe my contributions to social care are deserving of an OBE. Since starting my career as a nurse, I have been dedicated to helping people across the UK and contributing to creative and innovative care and best practice.
'It means so much to be able to provide a voice for the sector and accept this prestigious honour on behalf of so many amazing colleagues who make a difference to people’s lives every day. I am committed to continuing to work closely with my colleagues and peers at The Outstanding Society and in organisations across the sector to support the ongoing development of services that are able to deliver outstanding care to people who need it.'
Paul Harvey OBE, Fundraiser. For services to charity and to people living with Alzheimer's and dementia.
Sarah Metcalfe, Music for Dementia’s Managing Director, descried Paul Harvey as 'a champion in the growing British movement to make music an integral part of dementia care'. Sarah continued, 'It has been an honour and a privelege for the Utley Foundation’s Music and Dementia campaign to work with him and his son Nick over the last three years.
'Paul’s OBE is richly deserved, for his beautiful composition Four Notes and his work raising awareness - and millions of pounds - for the cause. All of us who have followed their journey have been moved and inspired.
'The Paul and Nick Harvey Fund has so far funded dozens of organisations and reached thousands of people living with dementia across the UK. It has also inspired a new Power of Music Fund to be launched in the autumn by the National Academy of Social Prescribing. Paul is changing the system.
'Music can become a lifeline for people living with dementia - to manage anxiety, bring back memories and feelings, and re-connect relationships. 52% of us know someone with dementia. How many of us know music can help?'
Nigel Hartley MBE, Chief Executive Officer, Mountbatten Hospice Group. For services to hospice care.
In response to receiving his honour as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), Nigel said, 'I am delighted and humbled to receive this award. It is a testament to everything my Mountbatten colleagues and I have achieved together, delivering relevant and sustainable 24/7 services for the communities we are here to serve.
'The award is the result of the work of many hands, and I accept it on behalf of all Mountbatten staff, volunteers and supporters who continue to be an inspiration to me.'
